Harold D. Schilling, 76 of Colesburg, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 25, at Kramer-Morris Funeral Home in Dyersville and before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 26, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, conducted by Rev. David Schatz. Burial was in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery in Petersburg.

Harold was born March 4, 1949, in Dubuque, son of Donald and Bernice (Hoefer) Schilling. He was raised on their family farm just north of Colesburg. Harold attended Edgewood-Colesburg schools and graduated from Ed Co High School. Their family were members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church where he was mass server as a young boy. Harold’s dad died from cancer in 1956, when he was just seven years old. His love of farming kicked into high gear when he was required to do most of the work that was considered man’s work at a very young age. Harold loved every aspect of farming and never minded working long hours to get the chores and field work done. Harold married Alice Scherbring, daughter of Albert and Abbie Scherbring of Petersburg on Sept. 12, 1970, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. Together they purchased a neighboring farm and raised their family and farmed there all their lives. Three sons were born to this marriage, Scott, Bob and Steve. These boys learned farming from their dad and helped on the farm all their lives too (in addition to their regular jobs). Harold and Alice were very thankful that they all lived close. In addition, eleven grandchildren joined their family unit and learned from “PaPa” everything one needed to know about making hay – Harold’s favorite job. They worked on tractors and farm equipment for countless hours. Designing, fabricating, spray painting and customizing tractors were his delight. He loved riding in his Can-Am to look at the hay and using his JCB to make trails in the woods for the grandchildren to go joyriding. Simply said, Harold loved being a Farmer!

Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Scott (Lynn Kruse) Schilling, Bob (Peggy Klimesh) Schilling, Steve (Janell DeSotel) Schilling all of Colesburg; grandchildren, Nicole (Alex) Elgin, Maria (Matt) Rave, Michael (Gillian), Gabriella, Daniel, Sam, Jake, Abigail, Ashley, Luke and Nolan Schilling; two great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Mary (Joe) Goebel of Luxemburg; in-laws, Diane Schilling, Delbert Burkle and Tom (Diane) Scherbring.
