Eagles Football vs. N. Butler

By Bruce Thein

The Clayton Ridge Eagles (2-2/4-2) earned a hard fought 28-22 victory over the visiting North Butler Bearcats (2-2/3-3) on Friday, October 3. The Eagles improved their record to 4-2 behind a balanced offensive attack and a clutch interception in the final moments of the game.

The Eagles scored on their very first play from scrimmage when senior quarterback Seth Kregel connected with sophomore Kasten Oberbreckling on a 59 yard touchdown strike, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite North Butler jumping ahead 14-6 after the first quarter, Clayton Ridges’ defense and steady offensive drives kept the Eagles within reach.

Kregel had a strong all around performance, throwing for 149 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 81 yards and a score. Senior running back Gabe Cook added 78 yards on the ground and a four yard rushing touchdown, powering a ground game that totaled 170 yards on the night. Through the air, Oberbreckling led all receivers with two catches for 76 yards and two scores, while senior Colton Hoeger added 38 yards on one reception.

On defense, the Eagles put together one of their most complete efforts of the season, recording 46 tackles, four sacks, and five tackles for loss. Senior Landon Reimer led the charge with two sacks to go along with five tackles, while five players recorded at least five tackles apiece. Besides Reimer, those players included Wyatt Parker, Gabe Cook, Kyle Sadewasser, and Kasten Oberbreckling.

The game came down to the final moments as North Butler threatened deep in Eagles territory. But senior Darren Brandt came up with a game saving interception on the three yard line to seal the victory and ignite the Clayton Ridge sideline.

Next up the Eagles will look for a signature victory as they make the long drive to face the Saint Ansgar Saints who are undefeated and ranked number one in Class A. The game is on Friday, October 10 in Saint Ansgar.
