Top-10 finishes from Weston Stannard and Owen Burke propelled Central to second place as a team at the Upper Iowa Conference boys golf meet, held May 4 at Big Rock Country Club in Fayette.
Central shot a combined 325 to finish eight strokes back of conference champ South Winneshiek’s 317. Waukon fell to third place with a 332, followed by MFL MarMac and Crestwood in fourth and fifth with respective scores of 337 and 338. Spots six through 11 included North Fayette Valley (349), Turkey Valley (355), Clayton Ridge (357), New Hampton (362), West Central (365) and Postville (369).
Waukon’s Dylan Stegen was the top individual golfer, finishing the 18 holes with a 74. Runner-up was Nicholas Bernhard from Turkey Valley, who shot a 76.
Central’s Stannard turned in an 80 for an eighth-place finish, and teammate Burke was close behind in 10th with an 81. Griffen Hammersland, also with an 81, ranked 12th. Other Warrior scores included an 83 from Blake Stevenson, who placed 17th, then an 88 by Owen Hammersland, which was good for 28th. Isaac Loan posted a 91 for 34th place.
The Warriors wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 19-14 and were 14-6 in the Upper Iowa Conference, where they finished fourth behind South Winn (18-1), Waukon (17-3) and MFL MarMac (15-5).
Next, they will compete in the Class 1A sectional meet at Jackson Height Golf Course in Waucoma on Wednesday, May 13. Also there will be Lake Mills, North Iowa, Northwood-Kensett, Riceville, South Winneshiek and Turkey Valley.
The top three teams, as well as the top two overall individual players from the site’s non-qualifying teams, will advance to districts on May 18.
