A pair of seventh inning runs lifted Postville over Clayton Ridge/Central 2-1 in a May 28 Upper Iowa Conference small school baseball showdown.
After a fourth inning run, the WarEagles were leading the Pirates 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, RBIs from Postville’s Griffin Day and Kaedyn Heitland walked the team off for its first victory of the young season.
Sophomore Mason Loan scored CRC’s lone run on a pass ball. He picked up one of the team’s four hits, with the others coming from Owen Hammersland, Dominique Mast and Griffen Hammersland. The WarEagles also drew three walks, but couldn’t convert baserunners—and their 11 stolen bases—into additional runs.
Zade Brock struck out 10 CRC hitters, a number nearly matched by WarEagle starter Griffen Hammersland, who fanned nine batters while allowing five hits, three walks and two earned runs. The Pirates stole three bases.
The loss dropped Clayton Ridge/Central to 0-3. The team had a doubleheader at Kee on June 1, then will host North Fayette Valley on June 3 and South Winneshiek June 4.
