The MFL MarMac baseball team fell to 1-7 in Upper Iowa Conference play last week after dropping games to South Winneshiek and New Hampton. One game against Crestwood was postponed due to weather, and another at Clayton Ridge/Central was cancelled.

The Warriors showed why they remain undefeated in a 10-0 win over the Bulldogs in Monona on June 10, where all but three runs came in the third inning. They netted seven hits and reached base another 12 times on walks or hit batters against pitchers Brent Roe and Easton Lange. Six stolen bases kept the MFL MarMac pitching and defense off balance.

South Winn’s Carver Wenthold pitched a one-hit shutout, allowing just a single and walk to Kyler Nuehring. Bulldogs Carsten Pester and Jason Larson also reached after being hit by pitches.

It didn’t get any easier for MFL MarMac on June 12, when the team welcomed one-loss New Hampton to Terry M. Heald Memorial Field. The Chickasaws out-scored the Bulldogs 23-5 in the doubleheader, winning by results of 8-1 and 15-4.

Freshman Tyce Wikner singled twice and scored MFL MarMac’s lone run in the opener. Sophomore Collin Wilder also recorded a hit and was hit by a pitch.

Wikner, Brady Welsh and Cameron Hagensick split pitching duties, allowing seven Chickasaw hits, seven walks and four hit batters. New Hampton swiped seven bases as well.

The Bulldogs grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the night cap, and tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of third after New Hampton plated four runs the inning before. The Chickasaws pushed a run across in the top of the fifth frame for a 5-4 advantage, before a 10-run outburst in the sixth sealed the 15-4 victory.

New Hampton had just six hits, but capitalized on 14 walks, five hit batters and five Bulldog errors.

MFL MarMac generated four hits—one each by Wikner, Nuehring, Larson and Daxton Diemel—and reached eight times via walk or hit batter. Nuehring and Hagensick each earned an RBI. Welsh led the Bulldogs with two runs scored, and Wikner and Cooper Kuehl reached home once. MFL MarMac had two stolen bases—one by Wikner and another courtesy of Nuehring.

The Bulldogs started this week on the road at Sumner-Fredericksburg June 15 and Postville June 17. Waukon will come to Monona for a conference doubleheader on June 18, before MFL MarMac closes out the week at Wapsie Valley June 19.
