MFL MarMac went 1-4 in North Fayette Valley’s Tigerhawk Softball Classic over the weekend, highlighted by a 12-11 victory over Boyer Valley on the opening night.
A six-run second inning had the Bulldogs up 8-2, when Boyer Valley stormed back with two runs in the top of the third, five in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take an 11-8 lead. MFL MarMac wasn’t done scoring, though, pushing four runs across the plate in the fifth inning to seal the victory. The offense collected 10 hits and reached twice on walks and once via a hit batter.
In other tournament action, MFL MarMac fell to Oelwein 12-0, Columbus Catholic 12-5 and Sumner-Fredericksburg 13-1.
The tournament followed a week in which the Bulldogs went 0-5, including a pair of doubleheader sweeps.
Undefeated Crestwood shut out MFL MarMac 8-0 and 14-0 in successive games on June 1, allowing just one hit in both. The Cadet offense, meanwhile, combined for 15 hits, 12 walks and three hit batters across the two contests, and reached three times due to errors. They also stole eight bases.
The Bulldogs ran into another tough opponent in Denver on June 2. Although they jumped ahead 2-1 after the first inning, the Cyclones cranked out six runs in the third inning to take the lead. Denver added one more run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to win 10-2.
Denver’s stat line included 10 hits, six walks and three hit batters. They also kept the Bulldog defense busy with nine stolen bases.
Cyclone pitcher Jenna Collins surrendered five walks and hit two batters, but no hits, to MFL MarMac. She recorded 11 strikeouts.
Turkey Valley swept the Bulldogs 11-1 and 14-2 in a June 3 doubleheader, benefitting from a seven-run inning in both victories.
The Trojans collected 15 hits, seven walks and two hit batters across the two games, then reached twice more due to errors. They stole three bases.
While the Bulldogs drew four walks in the first game, then three more and a hit batter in the second, Turkey Valley pitching allowed just one hit in each contest and struck out a combined 17 batters to minimize damage.
MFL MarMac (3-12) continues Upper Iowa Conference play this week, hosting Clayton Ridge and Waukon for doubleheaders on June 10 and 12.
