The MFL MarMac boys golf team placed second at an Upper Iowa Conference triangular at Waukon on April 13. The Bulldogs’ score of 162 trailed host Waukon’s 154. Central shot a 173.
Indians Dylan Stegen and Vaughn Stegen were the top individuals, both with 37s. MFL MarMac senior Jarett Hanson placed third with a 38, and was the only other golfer to shoot below a 40 that night.
Other MFL MarMac scores included a 40 from Jaxon Lamborn and 42s from Dayne Anderson and Will Miller. Wesley Corlett and Maddox Hanson each shot a 43.
Head coach Jake Wilke said this meet was one of several “close calls” the Bulldogs have had this season. He and the team remain positive.
“We have some good players and it’s early in the season. The weather hasn’t really been great, and the boys haven’t played at home hardly at all. That usually makes everyone more comfortable and playing their best,” he said.
Wilke stressed the Bulldogs will need to continue improving their short game to meet their conference and postseason goals.
“A couple people need to fix some things with their swing. That will really improve scores when we can play on the greens a little better,” he said.
The Bulldogs will golf every day but Wednesday this week. April 20 was a home conference triangular versus Postville and Clayton Ridge, then a non-conference triangular at Sumner-Fredericksburg on April 21. The team will travel to Edgewood-Colesburg on April 23, making up a meet from last week, before concluding at Wapsi Valley on April 24.
