A win over Upper Iowa Conference neighbor Postville highlighted a 1-4 week for the MFL MarMac softball team.
The Bulldogs opened play June 22 at North Fayette Valley, losing both games of a doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 14-4. No statistics for either team were available.
They snapped a six-game losing streak on June 24, defeating Postville 9-1 in game one of a doubleheader in Monona. After the Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, the Bulldogs fought back with nine unanswered runs—including four in the second inning and three in the sixth.
MFL MarMac collected 11 hits and four walks, along with four stolen bases. Bulldog pitching limited Postville to five hits—all singles—and surrendered three walks and a hit batter while striking out four.
The Bulldogs let an early 3-0 lead slip away in game two, when the Pirates pillaged five runs in the top of the fifth inning, then tacked on another run in the following frame for a 6-3 lead. Although MFL MarMac scratched out two runs in the bottom of the seventh, it wasn’t enough to catch Postville, who claimed its first victory of the season.
The Pirates picked up seven hits against MFL MarMac and capitalized on seven walks and four hit batters. Another three players reached on errors, which kept innings alive. Postville stole six bases.
MFL MarMac players combined for eight hits and two walks, and also stole three bases.
The Bulldogs closed out the week June 26, in a 9-1 loss at Central City. The Wildcats struck early, with a first inning four-spot, then lit the scoreboard up twice more in the third inning and three times in the fifth. MFL MarMac’s lone run came in the fourth inning.
Central City racked up 12 hits, four walks and two hit batters versus Bulldog pitching. They were stingy in comparison, allowing just two hits and a walk.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, MFL MarMac is 10-23 overall and 9-11 in the Upper Iowa Conference. The team hosted New Hampton for a doubleheader on June 29, then will travel to Kee for a twin bill on July 1. Postseason play begins on Monday, July 6. MFL MarMac will travel to Marquette Catholic for a Class 2A - Region 7 first round match-up.
