MFL MarMac freshmen Khloe Schutte and Blair Winter had strong showings at the state track and field meet, held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines May 21-23.
Winter medaled in the discus, throwing a personal best 120 feet, 8 inches. That placed her eighth among 24 competitors in Class 2A. She was the only freshman to medal and one of only three freshman who qualified for state in the event in Class 2A.
Anamosa’s Kasey Frommelt led the discus field with a distance of 140 feet, 5 inches, followed by a throw of 137 feet, 7 inches from Payton Harris of Mediapolis. Fellow Upper Iowa Conference athlete Hannah Schroeder of North Fayette Valley placed third after reaching 134 feet, 3 inches.
Luxi Coutu of Northeast (126 feet, 3 inches), Crystal Bonafazi-King of Anamosa (125 feet, 5 inches), McKenna Beck of Spirit Lake (121 feet, 7 inches) and Harper Pacha of Mid Prairie (121 feet, 6 inches) rounded out the rest of the top eight ahead of Winter.
Schutte competed in the 400 meter dash, posting a time of 1:01.59—good for 15th in the field of 24 Class 2A runners.
The top time of 55.29 seconds went to Pella Christian’s Bailey Vos. Jordan Tegeler of Northeast was the runner-up at 56.30 seconds, and Maryn Laures of Denver—who was the only runner to beat Schutte’s time at the state qualifying meet the week prior—crossed third in 57.04 seconds.
