WarEagles open baseball season

The Clayton Ridge/Central WarEagles baseball team opened its season last week with losses to Cascade and Starmont.

Cascade won the May 19 game 10-0, rattling off three runs in the opening inning and continuing to tack on runs the rest of the way. Cougar pitchers held the WarEagles hitless in six innings, only surrendering a walk to Seth Kregel.

CRC pitchers Carson Ruegnitz and Kregel combined for five and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and six walks, and the Cougars took advantage of 10 stolen bases. Five of the 10 runs Cascade scored were earned.

The WarEagles fell to Starmont 9-2 on May 22. The Stars cashed in on 10 hits, three walks and a pair of hit batters against WarEagle pitchers Griffen and Owen Hammersland. The CRC defense had four errors.

The WarEagles scored their first runs of the season on RBIs from Ruegnitz and Dominique Mast. Ruegnitz doubled twice, walked and scored a run, while Mast collected two singles. Griffen Hammersland, Isaac Loan and Brody McGuine also had hits for CRC, and Mason Loan scored a run.

The team combined for six stolen bases on seven attempts, including two apiece for Mason Loan and Owen Hammersland.

Clayton Ridge/Central will remain on the road this week, traveling to Waukon May 26 and Postville on May 28.
