A June 1 doubleheader sweep of Postville gave the Central softball team its first wins of the season.
The Warriors opened game one with a seven-run first inning, then tacked on runs in each of the next four innings to rout the Pirates 20-9. Players mashed an impressive 24 hits—nine of them for extra bases—and drew 10 walks.
Sophomore Tenley Bormann was a nearly perfect 5-for-6 at the plate, with two singles, two doubles and a triple. Senior Oakley Armstrong singled, doubled twice and homered, driving in two runs and scoring four times. Sophomore Payton Stannard finished the game 3-for-6 with two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored, while freshman Madelyn Pope singled and walked twice, stole a base, scored three runs and knocked in one. Sophomore Mylee Mueller drove in two runs on two hits, walked twice, stole a base and scored two runs.
On the mound, Bormann allowed six hits and four walks and struck out six Pirates. Only four of the nine runs scored against her were earned.
Central continued to roll in game two, defeating Postville 12-4 on another double-digit hit performance. Players combined for 14, along with six walks and two hit batters, led by a four-hit effort from Stannard. The centerfielder singled twice, doubled and tripled, driving in two runs. She stole three bases and crossed home plate three times.
Freshman Tenley Meyer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bormann reached base four times: twice on singles, once on a walk and once after being hit. She drove in a run, led the team with four steals and scored three runs. Freshman Zoey Armstrong’s stat line included a single, double and walk, along with two RBIs and a run scored.
The victory went to Pope, who held the Pirates to five hits, five walks, a hit batter and three earned runs in six innings. She tallied four strikeouts.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were on the other end of a doubleheader sweep against North Fayette Valley on June 3. The TigerHawks won game one 12-2 and game two 10-0, collecting a combined 27 hits, three walks and two hit batters in the two games. Two players reached via error. They also pressured the Central pitching staff and defense with eight stolen bases in the first game and six more in the second.
Central had five hits and one walk in the opener, but was held to just one hit in game two.
On June 5, the Warriors ran into another strong team in Springville, falling 12-4 in the non-conference match-up.
They then closed out the week with a tournament in Elkader on June 6. East Buchanan defeated Central 11-5, while Clayton Ridge earned a 16-6 victory over the home team.
The Warriors have two doubleheaders on the schedule this week: at home versus Clayton Ridge on June 9, then at Crestwood on June 10.
