The MFL MarMac girls golf team continued its strong start to the season by winning two more meets last week.
The Bulldogs easily defeated Central and Waukon in an Upper Iowa Conference triangular at the Waukon Golf and Country Club on April 13. Their score of 201 was over 20 strokes better than the 224 from runner-up Central. Waukon finished at 227.
All MFL MarMac golfers placed within the top seven, led by medalist Devon Meyer with a 47. Hadyn Meyer and Taylor Randall each shot 51s, followed by 52s from Hannah Jacobson and Mariah Moser. Jerica Wille posted a 54.
On April 16, the Bulldogs finished 10 strokes ahead of Edgewood-Colesburg, at 211 versus 221, to win a meet at Lone Pine Country Club in Colesburg. Springville finished third at 232.
Devon Meyer was the runner-up with a 49, finishing just behind Springville’s Kalleigh Greene, who shot a 48. Jacobson ended the round with a 52, in fifth place, while Wille, Hadyn Meyer and Randall slotted into spots seven through nine with scores of 54, 56 and 57.
MFL MarMac has just one loss this season, early on to UIC foe North Fayette Valley. Head coach Jake Wilke said that speaks volumes to how good the conference is.
“I’m pretty pleased with the way we’ve started,” he said. “On the girls side, having Taylor and Hannah playing pretty consistent is helping. Devon is our number one and playing well, which has helped our score. But we’re still looking for that solid fourth score.”
The coach cited ball striking as one of the team’s strengths so far.
“We’ve really improved our swings as a whole,” he said.
The success comes despite less than ideal playing conditions the past few weeks.
“We really haven’t had many good meet nights yet,” Wilke said. “Last night [at Ed-Co] was a beautiful day, but the course was so wet it was really tough conditions. The ball reacts differently when the ground is so wet. We’ve also played at some weird courses where, for the girls side, their pars are a little out of whack.”
This next week is a busy one for the Bulldogs, who hosted a conference triangular on April 20, before heading to Sumner-Fredericksburg on April 21. The team will compete in the Clayton Ridge Girls’ 18-Hole Invite on April 23, then close out the week at Wapsi Valley on April 24.
