Record-setting start to cross country season for MFL MarMac

The MFL MarMac girls and boys cross country teams started their season strong at the Aug. 25 Ed-Co Cross Country Invitational at Woods Edge Golf Course.

The Bulldog girls placed second in the field of 14 schools, led by top-10 individual finishes for junior Charlotte Meyer and senior McKenna Kozelka. Meyer placed fifth after turning in a time of 20:34, breaking the previous school record of 20:36 set by Hannah Schutte in 2015. A time of 20:56 earned seventh for Kozelka.

Other top finishers included senior Brooke Donlon in 18th place with a time of 21:54 and freshman Trinly Trappe and sophomore Grace Swatek a respective 26th and 27th with marks of 22:36.

Sophomore Brooklyn Landt turned in a 23:13 for 34th place, followed closely by freshman Mackenzie Birdnow in 35th on a time of 23:18. Junior Taryn Moser crossed the finish line in 24:08, in 44th place, then freshman Kinley Trappe and senior Skylar were a respective 47th and 48th with times of 24:21 and 24:25.

Sophomore Emma Grau placed 50th in 24:42, senior Samantha Ruff 53rd in 24:54, junior Evelyn Fritz 57th in 25:12, sophomore Aaliyah Corcoran 61st in 25:19, senior Brynlee Fritz 79th in 26:56, senior Kaylee Hoth 80th in 26:56, senior Emma Driscoll 96th in 28:30 and freshman Brenna Schlein 126th in 34:30.

The Bulldogs posted a team score of 73—20 points back of meet champion Waukon. Maquoketa Valley placed third with a score of 82, then South Winneshiek fourth at 96.

In the boys race, MFL MarMac posted a team score of 219, ranking eighth among the 11 schools who fielded full squads. Sophomore Trace Moser led the effort, placing 27th with a time of 19:42. Fellow sophomore Jude Onken was a close 34th, after crossing in 20:34.

Sophomore Cooper Kuehl put up a 21:08 for the Bulldogs, which was good for 49th place, followed by senior Tristan Bacon in 52nd on a time of 21:14. Senior Adian Reynolds raced to 79th with a mark of 22:44, then freshman Noah Breuer finished in 27:00 for 101st place.

This week, MFL MarMac is slated to host its home invite at Tri City Golf Course near Luana on Thursday, Sept. 3.
