Boutique Mississippi Mood is opening soon in downtown McGregor, offering curated consignment, gifts, home décor, candles, accessories and rotating vendor goods inspired by Mississippi River life.

It’s the inspiration of owner Marnie Robbins-Scott, who moved to the area 10 years ago from Arizona. But even before then, she fell in love with McGregor.

“My husband’s from here,” said Robbins-Scott. “My sister-in-law would bring me to McGregor when we’d come here on vacation, and I’ve always thought I would love to start a store here, or at least work in this town.”

“This just kind of fell together,” she quipped.

Mississippi Mood is located at 212 Main St., in a recently renovated and painted historic building that was originally a bar. In the decades since, it’s housed a ready-to-wear store, drug store and sundries store below, and a telephone office, dental practice and even the mayor’s office upstairs. Later tenants were the Noah’s Ark gift shop, Milo Moody Electric, The Twisted Chicken, Green Room Spa and, most recently, Cosmic Shift.

Robbins-Scott said she was attracted to that history, and plans to offer an eclectic mix of goods.

“We’ll have lots of river-themed décor and souvenirs. I love the river,” she shared. “We’re also going to have consigners in here, not for clothing, but for home goods, things that people make, artwork. I have keychains and pens that one person is making, and she made shirts. I also have my own T-shirt/sweatshirt business called Sideways Supply Co. I’ve made a few McGregor and Marquette shirts and whatnot. And we’d like to get some Hawkeye stuff in here.”

Robbins-Scott aims to open Mississippi Mood on Friday, July 17, and a grand opening and ribbon cutting are set for the following week, on July 24. Follow “Mississippi Mood” on Facebook for opening updates and planned hours.

“I’ve been showing pictures of the outside, and my daughter’s been taking pictures as we come along in here. We’ll keep everyone updated,” she said.

Although she has yet to open, Robbins-Scott is already blown away by the community support and interest in the business.

“Friends and just this whole community have been very supportive, and I really appreciate that. I love this town,” she said. “The people make it that way.”
