Central Softball Team

The Central softball team played a pair of Upper Iowa Conference doubleheaders against Kee and Waukon last week.

Kee swept the first twin bill 10-0 and 12-2 on June 22, generating a combined 20 hits, eight walks and two hit batters across the two games. They also stole nine bases.

Hawks pitcher Addison Winters allowed just one hit and one walk against the Warriors in a four-inning game one performance. She collected eight strikeouts.

Central generated more offensive success in game two, snagging three hits and a walk off Kee pitcher Rylee Mudderman, while scoring two first-inning runs.

On June 24, the Warriors traveled to Waukon, where an 8-0 shutout greeted them in game one of a doubleheader. The Indians opened the game with a two-run first inning, before adding one run in the third and a five-spot in the fourth. They did it behind 11 hits and three walks, in addition to reaching three times on Central errors. Once on base, the Indians swiped two bags.

Central was shut out on the scoreboard and nearly the base paths, as Waukon pitcher Harper Breitsprecher limited them to three hits and no walks in five innings. She struck out seven batters.

In game two, the Warriors stormed back from a 7-0 deficit with a five-run fifth inning. They scored once more in the top of the seventh, to come within a run at 7-6, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Waukon netted nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, and reached base five more times on two walks, two hit batters and an error. They also picked up four stolen bases.

Central matched their opponent’s nine hits and showed patience at the plate with five walks and a hit batter, while limiting their strikeouts to five.

The Warriors had two more doubleheaders on deck this week—the last of the regular season. The team played at West Central on June 29, then will host South Winneshiek July 1.

Postseason play in Class 1A - Region 7 begins on Monday, July 6, when Central heads to Calamus Wheatland.
