MFL MarMac runners cap off strong week with girls team title at Grundy Center

MFL MarMac cross country runners faced multiple ranked teams in a pair of meets last week, capped off by a team title for the lady Bulldogs at Grundy Center’s Sam Iverson Invitational.

Junior Charlotte Meyer placed fourth and McKenna Kozelka seventh to lead the Class 2A, 10th-ranked Bulldogs at Grundy Center on Sept. 24. Meyer completed the race in 20:14 and Kozelka 20:36.

Senior Brooke Donlon in 22nd place (21:29), junior Evelyn Fritz in 27th (21:45) and freshman Mackenzie Birdnow in 29th (21:45) rounded out the team score of 89, which put MFL MarMac in first place over Jesup by three points.

Strong results continued with Trinly Trappe in 31st on a time of 21:53, followed by Brooklyn Landt in 38th after crossing in 22:11.

The Bulldogs blazed by the competition in the junior varsity race as well, their score of 16 besting Bondurant-Farrar’s 39. They had four of the top five times and five within the top 10 at that level. That included Grace Swatek (22:49), Taryn Moser (23:05), Aaliyah Corcoran (23:15) and Kinley Trappe (23:17) in spots two through five, then Skylar Fisk seventh with a time of 23:28.

Emma Grau and Sam Ruff came in a respective 15th and 16th, completing the course in 24:45 and 24:49. Brynlee Fritz claimed 24th on a time of 25:54, and Kaylee Hoth was right behind her in 25th, posting a mark of 25:56. Emma Driscoll ran the race in 26:11, which was good for 29th, followed by Charlotte Koether in 38th at 27:39, Brenna Schlein in 53rd at 30:10 and Maeve Koether 57th at 31:43.

The MFL MarMac boys finished eighth, in the middle of the pack in the varsity race. Trace Moser had their top time of 18:47, placing 32nd individually. Jude Onken hit the finish line in 19:21, in 41st place, while Cooper Kuehl was 49th with a time of 19:47. Tristan Bacon in 59th and Gavin Kishman in 73rd, with respective times of 20:16 and 20:59, rounded out the team scores.

Adian Reynolds earned a time of 21:02 and 74th place in the varsity race, then Noah Breuer was 52nd and Payton Schultz 63rd at the JV level.

The Bulldogs’ success followed up a strong showing at the Waukon Invitational on Sept. 22, where the varsity girls placed third among 12 teams. With a score of 105, MFL MarMac was just one point back of Crestwood. Decorah, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, won the meet with a 52.

The team boasted two medalists, with Meyer earning eighth on a time of 20:21 and Kozelka 14th in 20:52. Donlon raced to 25th after crossing the line in 21:39, then Evie Fritz and Trinly Trappe were a respective 30th and 32nd with times of 22:00 and 22:06. Landt completed the race in 22:16, which was good for 36th place, followed by Swatek 44th at 22:44.

Birdnow led the Bulldogs’ JV field in second place. Kinley Trappe and Moser were 16th and 17th, Fisk 25th, Ruff 40th, Brynlee Fritz 47th, Driscoll 54th, Hoth 56th, Charlotte Koether 80th and Schlein 90th.

MFL MarMac was fourth in the JV team standings, their score of 82 just behind Waukon’s 77. Decorah won the race with 21 points and Denver was the runner-up with 71.

In the boys competition, the Bulldogs placed 10th among 12 teams at the varsity level. Moser crossed first for the team, in 33rd, on a time of 18:59, followed by Onken in 44th at 19:50. Kuehl traversed the course in 20:15, for 53rd place, and Bacon was a close 57th in 20:26. Kishman and Reynolds were a respective 76th and 77th with times of 21:25 and 21:39.

Breuer finished 100th in the JV race and Schultz 106th.

MFL MarMac will have another big test this week, at the Sept. 29 Jesup Cross Country Meet, where runners from over 30 schools will compete.
