Elkader
The Lemka-Stendel American Legion Post #106 in Elkader will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, by honoring the post’s namesake veterans who were both killed in World War 1. Both men are buried in Elkader, and the Legion continues to honor them by identifying them in the name of the post.
The remembrance will start at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, then proceed to the veterans memorial by the swimming pool for a short ceremony. It will continue to the East Side Cemetery and conclude at the Clayton County Courthouse and Keystone Bridge. Each stop will be roughly 15 minutes.
Garnavillo
In Garnavillo, the Memorial Day service will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Garnavillo School Gym. It will include a reading of the names of veterans and auxiliary members who have passed, as well as an announcement of Boys and Girls State nominees. The program will then continue at the Garnavillo City Park with a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”
Guttenberg
Guttenberg’s annual Memorial Day program will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Guttenberg Area Veterans Memorial in Ingleside Park. There will be no parade.
Veterans should meet at the memorial at 9:30 a.m. Color bearers and the firing squad should assemble west of the monument. The band will stand behind and north of the monument.
Frank Davis, commander of American Legion Post #373, will serve as master of ceremonies, and Legion Chaplain Barbara Arthur will give the invocation. Davis will announce the Service Person of the Year, who will have the honor of placing the wreath at the monument. The firing squad will give the traditional salute for the dead, followed by “Taps.” The Clayton Ridge High School band will play the national anthem. Quilts of Valor made by local quilters will be presented to military veterans as announced by Rosalie Kickbush. The program will close with a benediction by Barbara Arthur.
McGregor
Members of American Legion Post #267 of McGregor Post #305 of Marquette will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, with a series of events.
The McGregor Memorial Day Parade will kick off activities at 10 a.m. Lineup will be at 9:30 a.m. behind the MFL MarMac Middle School. The route will be from Cannon Park, down Main Street, then turning into the alley between Kwik Star and The Station. Businesses, organizations and individuals are still welcome to participate. Following the parade, at 10:45 a.m., the public is invited to a short ceremony at the McGregor riverfront. Services will then continue at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near the Avenue of Flags. The MFL MarMac band will perform and eighth grade students will recite the “Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” A keynote address will follow, then a gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”
