Guttenberg and Garnavillo will pay tribute to veterans both living and dead at Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25.
Guttenberg’s annual Memorial Day program will begin at 10 a.m. that day, at the Guttenberg Area Veterans Memorial in Ingleside Park. There will be no parade.
Veterans should meet at the memorial at 9:30 a.m. Color bearers and the firing squad should assemble west of the monument. The band will stand behind and north of the monument.
Frank Davis, commander of American Legion Post #373, will serve as master of ceremonies, and Legion Chaplain Barbara Arthur will give the invocation.
Davis will announce the Service Person of the Year, who will have the honor of placing the wreath at the monument. The firing squad will give the traditional salute for the dead, followed by “Taps.” The Clayton Ridge High School band will play the national anthem.
Quilts of Valor made by local quilters will be presented to military veterans as announced by Rosalie Kickbush.
The program will close with a benediction by Barbara Arthur.
In Garnavillo, the Memorial Day service will begin at 11 a.m., at the Garnavillo School Gym. It will include reading of the names of veterans and auxiliary members who have passed, as well as an announcement of Boys and Girls State nominees. The program will then continue at the Garnavillo City Park with a rifle salute and the playing of “Taps.”
Colesburg American Legion Post 582 will hold Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25 at three area cemeteries.
Services will be at Platt Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Brown Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. and Bolsinger Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.
The names of deceased veterans in each cemetery will be read, a poppy wreath will be laid, a prayer read and Taps will be played. The public is invited to one or all of the cemeteries.
The Legion and Auxiliary members will meet in the Colesburg Legion room at 8:45 a.m. to pick up flags and assignments.
